Sniffing and Oxytocin: Effects on Olfactory Memories
In this issue of Neuron, Oettl et al. (2016) show how oxytocin can boost processing of olfactory information in female rats by a top-downregulation from the anterior olfactory nucleus onto the main olfactory bulb. As a result, interactions with juvenile conspecifics receive more attention and are longer memorized.
متن کاملIndividual and synergistic effects of sniffing frequency and flow rate on olfactory bulb activity.
Is faster or stronger sniffing important for the olfactory system? Odorant molecules are captured by sniffing. The features of sniffing constrain both the temporality and intensity of the input to the olfactory structures. In this context, it is clear that variations in both the sniff frequency and flow rate have a major impact on the activation of olfactory structures. However, the question of...
متن کاملMirror Sniffing: Humans Mimic Olfactory Sampling Behavior
Ample evidence suggests that social chemosignaling plays a significant role in human behavior. Processing of odors and chemosignals depends on sniffing. Given this, we hypothesized that humans may have evolved an automatic mechanism driving sniffs in response to conspecific sniffing. To test this, we measured sniffing behavior of human subjects watching the movie Perfume, which contains many ol...
متن کاملOlfactory system activation from sniffing: effects in piriform and orbitofrontal cortex.
Neuroimaging studies suggest that piriform cortex is activated at least in part by sniffing. We used H(2)(15)O positron emission tomography (PET) to study 15 healthy volunteers while they participated in four conditions, two of which were sniffing odorants and odorless air. The remaining two conditions involved a constant, very low flow of either odorized or odorless air during velopharyngeal c...
متن کاملThe effects of Adrenergic agents on the dopaminergic-induced sniffing
There is evidence indicating that adrenoceptor mechanisms may influence some of the behaviors in rat. However the role of adrenoceptor agents on sniffing has not been identified. In the present study, the influence of adrenoceptor agents on sniffing induced by apomorphine and amphetamine has been investigated. Male Albino rats, weighing 150-250 g were used for all experiments. The behavior wa...
